"Grandma" is Gloria Leonard Hall
of Palmyra, Nebraska. She first gained an interest in quilting as a young girl
while watching the volunteer ladies at her church work on a double wedding ring
quilt. "I watched them quilt and quilt and thought, 'Someday!'"
Qualifications
Gloria has taken five national seminars in textile/fabric
historical research. She has attended the appraisal school of Barbara Brackman
and Terry Clothier Thompson (of Lawrence, Kansas) and is a qualified fabric
appraiser. She also lectures on antique quilts and has presented workshops at a
local community college about quilt and fabric dating.
Gloria has bought and sold nearly 1,000 quilts to clients
from Washington, D.C. to Hollywood and from Japan to England. She shows her
prized quilts at events throughout the country each year, the highlight of
which is the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas.
Personal
Gloria lives on an acreage outside of Palmyra, near Lincoln,
Nebraska, where the Nebraska City cutoff of the Oregon Trail passes by her
land.
Her most treasured quilt is an elongated nine-patch with
unglazed English chintz from the 1830s. It was pieced and quilted by a
10-year-old girl. The documentation as to the quilter and date are written on
the back, making it a rare piece.
Gloria is active in the Lincoln (NE) Quilters Guild, the
American Quilt Society, the American Quilt Study Group, Basket Cases, and
Celestial Quilters.
